The verdict
The S'well Explorer earns its $45 price tag if you want a straw bottle that actually looks good on a desk — but at 1.06 lbs empty, you'll feel every ounce on a long hike.
What we love
- Flip straw lid removes all the friction from drinking — ideal for desks and commutes
- 32oz hits the sweet spot between capacity and portability for most daily routines
- Plum colorway is genuinely sophisticated; matte finish resists fingerprints
- S'well's triple-layer construction is proven and consistent across the line
- Fits standard car cup holders, unlike most 40oz competitors
Worth knowing
- 1.06 lbs empty is heavy — full, it's about 3 lbs, which matters on longer outdoor carries
- Flip straw lids require more frequent deep cleaning than straight-mouth bottles
- Straw lids are not fully leakproof if tipped sideways in a bag
- $45 is premium pricing for 32oz; lighter or cheaper alternatives exist at this capacity
Our review
The case for a flip-straw bottle this nice
Most straw bottles live in a visual no-man's-land between gym gear and toddler cup. S'well sidesteps that entirely with the Explorer — the Plum colorway is genuinely deep and rich, closer to an eggplant than a purple crayon, and the matte finish doesn't show fingerprints the way glossy stainless does. On a desk, in a bag, at a farmer's market: it reads as an object someone chose deliberately.
The flip straw lid is the whole pitch here. You pop the bail, sip, snap it shut — no unscrewing, no fumbling with a cap while driving. For commuters, desk workers, or anyone who refills constantly throughout the day, that friction reduction is real. We used it for a week as a primary desk bottle and never once thought about the lid after the first hour.
Thirty-two ounces is the right size
This is an underrated choice. Forty-ounce bottles are having a moment, but 32oz is the size that fits most car cup holders, most bag side pockets, and most humans' actual daily water needs without requiring a lunchbox-sized bag. If you've bought a 40oz Quencher and found yourself nursing it all day because it's awkward to carry, the 32oz Explorer is a corrective.
The weight is worth flagging
At 1.06 lbs empty, the Explorer is heavy for a water bottle. Full, you're looking at roughly three pounds. For desk use or driving, that's irrelevant. For trail running, a long hike, or any activity where you're holding the bottle for hours, it's a real consideration — there are lighter options at this price point, and S'well isn't trying to compete with ultralight trail gear here.
What S'well does well
S'well's core competency is triple-layer insulation in a bottle that doesn't look clinical. The Explorer carries that forward. The brand has been doing this since 2010, and the construction quality is consistent — no plastic-smell issues, no flex in the walls, no lid that starts rattling after a month.
The flip straw caveat
Straw lids are notoriously harder to clean than straight mouth bottles, and flip mechanisms collect gunk at the hinge over time. If you're filling this with anything other than water — smoothies, electrolyte mixes, juice — plan to disassemble and scrub the straw regularly. We'd also note that flip straw lids are generally not fully leakproof if the bottle tips on its side, so don't toss this unsecured into a bag and assume you're fine.
Common questions
Explorer with Flip Straw Lid | 32oz, answered
Is the S'well Explorer dishwasher safe?
S'well generally recommends hand-washing their insulated bottles to protect the vacuum seal and finish — check the care instructions that ship with the bottle, as straw lid components in particular can degrade faster in high heat.
Does the S'well Explorer keep drinks cold?
S'well's triple-layer insulation is well-regarded across their line. The Explorer uses the same construction. We didn't receive cold-hours specs from S'well directly, so we won't put a number on it — but the brand's insulation reputation is one of the reasons people pay $45 for a water bottle.
Is the S'well Explorer leakproof?
The flip straw lid seals well when the bail is closed upright, but like most straw-style lids, it's not designed to be fully leakproof on its side. Upright in a bag pocket: fine. Tossed horizontally: risky.
How does the S'well Explorer compare to a Stanley Quencher?
The Stanley 40oz Quencher is a wider-mouth tumbler with a handle — better for iced drinks with a handle grip, but it doesn't fit most cup holders and is harder to carry on a body. The Explorer is narrower, lighter-looking (though still 1.06 lbs), and more traditional bottle-shaped. The Stanley wins on capacity and handle; the S'well wins on portability and aesthetics.
What colors does the S'well Explorer come in?
The Explorer line comes in multiple colorways. This review covers the Plum finish specifically. Check S'well's site for current color availability — their lineup rotates seasonally.
Is 32oz enough for a full day of hydration?
The standard daily hydration recommendation for most adults is around 64oz, so 32oz covers roughly half a day. For most desk workers who have access to a tap or water cooler to refill once, 32oz is a practical daily-carry size. If you're in situations where you can't refill, size up.
