Why We Like It

S'well built its reputation on looking beautiful and keeping drinks cold for an absurdly long time. The original wide-mouth and screw-top bottles delivered on both counts, but they had an obvious problem: you needed two hands and a moment of attention to open them. The Explorer line fixes that. The flip straw lid clicks open with your thumb, lets you sip without tilting the bottle, and snaps shut again without thinking about it. That's a meaningful quality-of-life upgrade for anyone who actually moves around.

The Carnelian colorway — a warm, slightly burnished brick-red — looks more considered than the average 'sporty' palette. It doesn't scream 'gym bag.' It works just as well on a work desk or a weekend table. The matte texture that S'well uses on the Explorer exterior gives it a solid, no-slip grip that plain powder-coat bottles don't always manage.

Build and Feel

At 24 ounces, this is a one-fill morning-through-lunch bottle for most people — not quite enough to hit 64 oz a day on its own, but substantial without being unwieldy. The trade-off is weight: 1.06 lb empty is meaningfully heavier than a single-wall or plastic bottle of the same volume. That's the cost of the stainless triple-wall construction, and most people will make peace with it quickly. It sits solidly; it doesn't rattle.

The straw is integrated into the lid and seals when closed, which matters for a bag you're actually tossing around. We haven't had leaks with the lid fully latched.

The Catch

The flip straw lid is purpose-built for cold drinks. If you rotate between cold water, iced coffee, and the occasional tea, you'll want a second lid — or a different bottle entirely — for the hot stuff. Sipping hot liquid through a straw is a bad time, and S'well is clear that the Explorer lid isn't rated for it. That single constraint is the main reason to look elsewhere.

At $32, you're paying for the S'well brand equity and the insulation performance that comes with it. A Stanley or Hydro Flask at similar price points will do the same thermal job, often with more lid flexibility. If the Carnelian color and S'well's specific aesthetic are calling to you, that's a legitimate reason to choose this one — just don't pretend you're buying it for pure utility.

Bottom Line

For what it's designed to do — cold drinks, active days, one-handed sipping — the Explorer earns its price. The flip straw lid feels like it should have been standard from the beginning.
