The verdict

The S'well Explorer is the rare everyday bottle that actually earns its 'adventure' label — the built-in handle is thoughtful enough to change how you carry water, and the 24oz size sits in the sweet spot between barely-enough and too-much-to-lug.

What we love

  • Built-in ergonomic handle is genuinely well-designed — integrated, not an add-on
  • 24oz hits the sweet spot for all-day carry without bulk
  • Green Jasper colorway is sophisticated, not loud
  • Triple-wall stainless construction keeps drinks cold without plastic off-taste
  • Wide mouth makes ice loading and cleaning straightforward

Worth knowing

  • 1.06 lb empty is heavy — gram-counting hikers or ultralight backpackers will feel it
  • Wide mouth can splash when drinking on the move; a compatible straw lid fixes this but costs extra
  • No handle loop for carabiner attachment — you carry it by the integrated handle or not at all
  • $32 isn't cheap; the HydroFlask Wide Mouth exists at a similar price with more accessory compatibility

Our review

What S'well got right with the handle

We've tried a lot of bottles with afterthought handles — rubber loops duct-taped to a silicone boot, paracord lashed through a metal ring. The Explorer's handle is different because it's integrated into the body itself, shaped to let four fingers wrap comfortably without your knuckles grazing hot pavement when you set it down. We noticed this most on trail: one-handed carry on an uneven descent is just easier when the handle is part of the bottle, not clipped to it.

The case for 24 ounces

Three cups. That's what 24oz gets you — enough for a two-hour hike, a morning commute plus a midday refill, or a long gym session. It's a deliberate size. S'well makes the Explorer bigger, but 24oz threads the needle between "I need to refill this constantly" and "this thing won't fit in my bag's side pocket." The standard bottle pocket on most hiking daypacks and gym bags fits it cleanly.

Green Jasper, specifically

The colorway is worth naming. Green Jasper reads more deep forest than the loud Kelly green that ages badly — it photographs well in natural light and doesn't show scuffs the way matte black does. It's the kind of color that looks intentional, not athletic. If you're someone who thinks about what your gear says about you, this is the right call.

The weight conversation

The Explorer weighs 1.06 lb empty. That is not nothing. Filled to capacity, you're carrying close to two and a half pounds. On a long trail with a full pack, that's real. S'well's triple-wall stainless construction is why the insulation works, and it's why the bottle is heavy — there's no way around the tradeoff. If you're a backpacker counting grams, this isn't your bottle. If you're a commuter or a car camper or someone doing day hikes from a trailhead, the weight never becomes a problem.

At $32, what are you actually paying for

S'well sits above the commodity end of the insulated bottle market and below the premium-obsessed end. At this price, you're paying for the construction quality (no plastic aftertaste, no rust at the rim after a year), the colorway program (S'well's palette is genuinely considered), and the handle design that cheaper bottles don't bother getting right. You're not paying for brand hype — S'well has been around long enough to be the unsexy reliable choice, which is exactly what you want in a bottle.

One honest note on the mouth

The Explorer has a wide mouth, which makes ice cube loading easy and cleaning easy, but also means drinking from it while moving requires a little more attention than a narrow-mouth bottle. We'd suggest a compatible straw lid if you're using it in the car — the wide opening is generous when stationary, slightly splashy when you hit a bump.

Common questions

Explorer | 24oz, answered

How long does the S'well Explorer keep drinks cold?

S'well's triple-wall vacuum insulation is the same construction used across their line, designed to maintain cold temperatures for an extended period — most users report ice remaining after 24 hours in moderate conditions. S'well does not publish exact temperature retention specs for the Explorer specifically.

Is the S'well Explorer dishwasher safe?

No. S'well recommends hand-washing only. The dishwasher's heat can damage the vacuum seal that makes the insulation work.

What is Green Jasper — is it a matte or glossy finish?

Green Jasper is a deep, muted green. S'well uses a smooth finish on the Explorer line — not a heavily textured matte, but not a mirror polish either. It resists fingerprints reasonably well.

Does the S'well Explorer fit in a standard car cup holder?

The 24oz Explorer is wider at the body than a typical narrow-mouth bottle, and may not fit in tighter OEM cup holders. Many aftermarket and truck cup holders accommodate it, but check your vehicle's holder diameter before committing.

Is the S'well Explorer BPA-free?

Yes. S'well uses 18/8 stainless steel, which contains no BPA or other plastic components in contact with your drink.

How does the S'well Explorer compare to the standard S'well bottle?

The Explorer is built specifically for on-the-go carry: the defining difference is the integrated ergonomic handle, which the standard S'well bottle doesn't have. If you're mostly at a desk, the standard bottle is lighter. If you're moving, the handle justifies the slight weight trade-off.
