Best for
Commuters and recreational cyclists who ride in unpredictable weather and want a lightweight, genuinely breathable waterproof they can throw on over tights without looking like they raided a hardware store.

You ride in all-day mountain rain, need a single-layer cold-weather solution, or prioritize packability so extreme that even 300g matters.

The verdict
A rare waterproof cycling trouser that solves both sides of the equation: 8,000mm waterproofing keeps rain out, while 20,000+ g/m²/24hr breathability means you won't arrive drenched in your own sweat — and at 300g, you'll forget you packed them.
What we love
- 20,000+ g/m²/24hr breathability is exceptional for the price — better than many mid-range Gore-Tex garments
- 300g is genuinely light; stuffs into a jersey pocket
- Tailored cut designed for cycling ergonomics, not just walking
- 8,000mm waterproofing handles real commuter rain without leaking
- Elasticated waistband layers cleanly over tights in seconds
Worth knowing
- 8,000mm waterproofing is solid but not storm-ready — not the choice for mountain riding or all-day downpours
- Only two front pockets; limited storage for longer rides
- UK sizing requires conversion — easy to order wrong if you skip the size guide
- Layers-over-tights design means you're wearing two lower-body garments in cold weather; runs warm on hard efforts
Our review
The problem with most rain pants
Waterproof cycling kit tends to fail in one of two ways: either it's so breathable it lets rain through by mile six, or it's so sealed you're essentially wearing a sauna bag. We've tested a lot of both. Proviz's women's cycling trousers sit in the narrow band where neither of those things happens.
The 8,000mm hydrostatic head rating is honest, working-cyclist waterproofing — enough for sustained commuter rain and surprise downpours, not quite the 20,000mm+ ceiling you'd want for alpine riding in a proper storm. But the breathability number is where these pants genuinely stand out: 20,000+ g/m²/24hr puts them in the same conversation as mid-tier Gore-Tex, which typically rates 15,000–20,000. For a trouser at this price, that's notable.
Fit and construction
The tailored cut is the other reason we'd reach for these over a cheaper nylon sack. They're shaped for someone who is actually on a bike — enough room through the hip and seat, a cleaner line through the leg so they don't billow into the drivetrain, and an elasticated waistband that lets you pull them on over cycling tights in under ten seconds. At 300g they weigh roughly the same as a light fleece, so stuffing them into a jersey pocket or day bag isn't a negotiation.
Two front pockets are functional but modest — a phone fits in one, keys in the other. Don't expect cargo-level storage.
On the bike
Proviz makes cycling-specific gear, and it shows in the small details. The waistband sits high enough to stay put when you're in a forward riding position — a detail that sounds obvious until you've spent a wet commute yanking kit back up over your lower back. The tailored leg means no bunching behind the knee.
What to know before you buy
These are trousers, not tights — they're meant to layer over base layers or bib tights on cold, wet days, not replace them. The elasticated waist is convenient but means no belt adjustment if sizing falls between sizes. And while the breathability is genuinely good, no waterproof membrane breathes like a non-waterproof fabric: on hard efforts in milder temperatures, you'll still feel warmth build.
Proviz is a UK-based brand whose sizing runs in UK sizes — size 08 here corresponds to a US 4. Check their size guide before ordering.
Common questions
Women’s Tailored Waterproof Cycling Trousers, answered
Are Proviz cycling trousers true to size?
Proviz uses UK sizing. A UK size 08 is roughly a US size 4. Check Proviz's size guide against your waist and hip measurements before ordering — the elasticated waistband offers some flexibility, but the tailored leg doesn't.
What does 8,000mm waterproofing actually mean in practice?
The hydrostatic head rating measures how much water pressure the fabric resists before it leaks. 8,000mm handles sustained moderate-to-heavy rain comfortably — typical commuter conditions. For all-day storms or mountain riding, you'd want 15,000mm+.
Can I wear these as standalone trousers or do I need tights underneath?
These are an outer layer, not a replacement for tights or base layers. They're unlined, so in cold conditions you'll want something underneath. In milder wet weather (55°F+), some riders wear them over shorts.
How breathable are they compared to Gore-Tex?
Gore-Tex Pro typically rates around 25,000 g/m²/24hr; standard Gore-Tex runs 15,000–20,000. These Proviz trousers claim 20,000+, which puts them at the top of the mid-tier range — meaningfully more breathable than budget waterproofs, at a fraction of Gore-Tex pricing.
Are they suitable for commuting by bike?
Yes — the tailored cut, quick-on elasticated waist, and light weight (300g) make them a practical commuter pick. The two front pockets hold a phone and keys. They're not reflective on their own, so add lights or a reflective layer for low-light commutes.
Do these have ankle zips or cuffs for getting over shoes?
The product specs don't specify ankle closures. If fit over cycling shoes is a concern, contact Proviz directly or check the retailer's full listing for cuff details before buying.
