The case for a proper hi-vis layer

Most reflective gear is an afterthought — a few strips of tape on a jacket that bounce back a sliver of headlight while you're still functionally invisible to a driver doing 40. The Proviz Reflect360 Gilet takes the opposite approach: the entire outer fabric is the reflective material, CE EN 20471 certified to make you visible at over 300 metres in the dark. At $34.99, it's one of the few pieces of kit where the safety claim is backed by an actual tested standard, not a marketing team. The Guardian called it out for good reason.

We wore it on early-morning runs and late-autumn cycling commutes — exactly the use cases it's built for — and came away genuinely impressed with what Proviz has engineered at this price point.

The REFLECT360 fabric, honestly assessed

The outer material has a smooth, almost silvery finish in daylight that reads as distinctly purposeful — this is not trying to hide the fact that it's hi-vis gear. At night, though, it earns its keep. Headlights and streetlights bounce back from every angle, which is the point: visibility isn't just a panel on your chest, it's about being seen from the side, from behind, and at distance. That's what the EN 20471 certification actually measures.

The fabric also carries STANDARD certification for harmful chemicals in textiles. That's the kind of quiet detail that matters if you're buying for a teenager, or simply prefer knowing your skin-contact kit has been independently tested.

Fit, weight, and movement

At approximately 150g, the Reflect360 sits in your hand like almost nothing. On the body, it layers cleanly over a long-sleeve base without bunching, and the elasticated waistband keeps it from riding up when you're reaching forward over handlebars or leaning into a stride. The fleece-lined collar is the detail that surprised us most — it's a genuine warmth upgrade on cold mornings without adding meaningful bulk.

The breathable side mesh panels do real work. Gilets live or die on whether they trap heat through the back on hard efforts, and the mesh here keeps airflow moving. The stretch in those panels also helps the fit adapt across torso shapes — useful if you're between sizes or if your cycling position compresses the torso differently than your running form.

The practical details that actually matter

Two side zip pockets, SBS hardware, and zip pulls designed to work with gloves — these are not accidents. Proviz clearly built this for real-world winter use. The pockets are deep enough to stash a phone, a hat, or a rolled pair of gloves: the trifecta of things you need to access mid-run when conditions shift. The zipper action stayed smooth across repeated use.

Where it falls short

Let's be honest about what this isn't: waterproof. The main body is windproof and water-resistant — it'll shrug off light rain and morning mist — but in a sustained downpour, you'll feel it. If your training regularly takes you into heavy rain, this needs a waterproof shell over it, not instead of one.

The other real limitation is arm coverage. A gilet is a gilet — your arms are exposed. On fast descents or in sub-zero temperatures, wind chill on bare arms can be uncomfortable even if your core is warm. Plan your base layers accordingly.

And in daylight: the reflective finish is prominent. Proviz has done what it can with the colorway options — the coral reads as cheerful rather than clinical — but anyone hoping for something that disappears into a casual outfit will be making a visible compromise. The hi-vis function is the entire point of this product, and it shows.
