The case for a $25 gilet

We've worn expensive gilets that felt like wearing a grocery bag and cheap ones that fell apart after a season. The Proviz Everyday lands in a different spot entirely: it's priced like an afterthought but engineered like something you'll actually pack in your jersey pocket before a ride or toss into your running vest before a trail session.

The core premise is simple. A windproof, water-resistant front panel cuts the cold coming at you on a descent or into a headwind. Breathable mesh side panels let heat escape when you're working. That's the whole deal, and Proviz executes it without bloat.

Fit and feel on the move

At 150 grams, you'll forget it's in your pocket until you need it — which is exactly the point of a gilet. The elasticated waistband gives it a fitted feel without cinching, and the side mesh stretches generously, so you're not fighting the jacket when you're mid-stride or reaching for your drops. It runs true to European sizing (this colorway is Coral, which photographs warmer than it reads in person — more salmon than orange).

The cut is designed to layer over a base layer or a lightweight long-sleeve, and the proportions hold up. It doesn't billow at speed, and the hem doesn't ride up when you're bent over handlebars.

The pockets are a genuine win

Two zipped side pockets is not a given at this price. Both are large enough to hold a phone plus a folded hat or a gel stash. The SBS zips run smooth one-handed, and the pulls are sized for gloved fingers — a small thing that matters enormously when you're 40 minutes into a cold ride and your hands aren't fully cooperating.

Visibility and weather protection

Proviz built its reputation on reflective gear, and the Everyday Gilet carries that DNA. It won't light you up like their REFLECT360 line, but the reflective hits are present and positioned sensibly — you'll be visible to traffic in low light without looking like a safety vest at brunch.

On weather: be honest with yourself about what "water-resistant" means. The main body handles splashes and light drizzle comfortably. A sustained shower will eventually get through. This is a wind layer and a chill-blocker, not a rain jacket. Don't take it out when the radar is angry.

What it doesn't do

Your arms are exposed — that's the nature of a gilet. If the temperature is genuinely cold rather than just brisk, you'll want a proper jacket or a serious base layer underneath. The side mesh, while excellent for breathability, offers zero wind protection on the flanks, which you'll notice on days with a crosswind.

Two colors total isn't much selection, and the Coral leans more fashion-forward than some runners will want for a technical layer. There's no chest pocket and no built-in loop for earphone cords, which are small omissions but worth noting if you're particular about your kit setup.
