The verdict
At $29.99, the Proviz Reflective Reversible Gilet is the clearest argument we know for keeping a high-viz layer in your kit — CE EN 20471 certified, genuinely two-sided, and machine washable without sacrificing its reflective properties.
What we love
- CE EN 20471 certified — a real safety standard, not a marketing badge
- Two genuinely useful sides: fluorescent for day, 100% reflective for night
- Glove-friendly zip pulls that work when it matters
- Machine washable without losing reflective properties
- Under $30 for certified high-visibility protection
Worth knowing
- Vest-only — no arm coverage, limited warmth in cold or wind
- Reflective side runs slightly stiffer than the fluorescent side
- Not waterproof — needs a separate rain layer in wet conditions
- Back pocket is handy but not large enough for most U-locks or pumps
Our review
The case for a $30 piece of safety gear
Most cyclists underinvest in visibility. A good gilet doesn't need to cost much — it needs to work. The Proviz Reflective Reversible Gilet costs less than a tank of gas and carries a certification (CE EN 20471) that means something: it's been tested against a European standard originally written for road workers and construction crews. That's the bar. Your commute qualifies.
Two sides, two jobs
The reversible concept is more useful in practice than it sounds on paper. Flip it fluorescent red or yellow for bright-daylight rides — visibility against grey tarmac and grey skies. Flip it to the 100% reflective side for dusk, pre-dawn, and full dark, where oncoming headlights bounce straight back at drivers. The two-way zip makes the transition quick enough to do at a red light. We appreciate that Proviz didn't bury this feature in marketing language: it's a genuine dual-mode garment, not a vest with a stripe.
Breathability that doesn't embarrass itself
The reflective side uses a meshed construction rather than solid laminate, which matters more than you'd think. Solid reflective layers trap heat fast. The mesh allows airflow during hard efforts, and while this is still a vest — no sleeves, no hood — it sits comfortably through extended rides without becoming a sauna. For three-season commuters and fair-weather trail riders, that's the right tradeoff.
Pockets and practicality
A chest pocket handles your phone or a folded card; a back pocket takes a snack, a folded tool, or a light layer. Neither is huge, but both are positioned sensibly and secured with zips. The zip pulls themselves are oversized enough to grab with glove-covered fingers — a detail that sounds minor until you're trying to access your pocket in November at 6 a.m.
Washing and longevity
Reflective gear has a reputation for degrading with washing. Proviz says machine washable, and the CE EN 20471 certification includes washability testing as part of the standard — so this isn't a claim we're taking on faith. The fluorescent side should hold its color through a reasonable number of cycles, though we'd still recommend cold wash and air dry as a habit.
The honest caveats
This is a vest. It does nothing for your arms in wind or cold, and at $29.99 it's not waterproof. In shoulder seasons you'll still want a base layer underneath and possibly a jacket on top. The reflective side is also stiffer than the fluorescent side — not uncomfortable, but perceptible. And if you're riding in conditions where you genuinely need warmth, a gilet is a supplement, not a solution.
Common questions
Men's Reflective Reversible Cycling Gilet, answered
What does CE EN 20471 certified mean on a cycling vest?
CE EN 20471 is a European safety standard originally designed for workers in high-traffic environments. It specifies minimum areas of fluorescent and reflective material, plus washability requirements. A vest with this certification has been independently tested — it's not a manufacturer claim.
What's the difference between the two sides of the Proviz gilet?
The fluorescent side (red or yellow) is designed for daytime visibility — bright color is easier for drivers to spot in daylight. The 100% reflective side is optimized for low-light and night riding, bouncing headlights directly back at drivers. The two-way zip lets you switch sides without fully removing the vest.
Does washing the Proviz gilet ruin the reflective material?
Proviz says it's machine washable, and washability is part of the CE EN 20471 testing criteria, so the certification provides some assurance. Cold wash and air dry will extend the life of both the fluorescent color and the reflective coating.
Is the Proviz reversible gilet windproof?
No. The meshed reflective material is designed for breathability, which means it offers minimal wind resistance. It works well in mild conditions but pairs best with a base layer in colder or windier weather.
How does the Proviz gilet compare to a full cycling jacket?
A gilet trades arm coverage and weather protection for packability and versatility. The Proviz is lighter, more packable, and significantly cheaper than a comparable full jacket — the right choice if visibility is your primary need and warmth isn't.
Does this gilet fit over a cycling jersey or a jacket?
It's cut to layer over a jersey or light base layer for three-season use. Sizing runs fairly close-fitting, so if you plan to wear it over a heavier mid-layer, size up.
