The case for a $30 piece of safety gear

Most cyclists underinvest in visibility. A good gilet doesn't need to cost much — it needs to work. The Proviz Reflective Reversible Gilet costs less than a tank of gas and carries a certification (CE EN 20471) that means something: it's been tested against a European standard originally written for road workers and construction crews. That's the bar. Your commute qualifies.

Two sides, two jobs

The reversible concept is more useful in practice than it sounds on paper. Flip it fluorescent red or yellow for bright-daylight rides — visibility against grey tarmac and grey skies. Flip it to the 100% reflective side for dusk, pre-dawn, and full dark, where oncoming headlights bounce straight back at drivers. The two-way zip makes the transition quick enough to do at a red light. We appreciate that Proviz didn't bury this feature in marketing language: it's a genuine dual-mode garment, not a vest with a stripe.

Breathability that doesn't embarrass itself

The reflective side uses a meshed construction rather than solid laminate, which matters more than you'd think. Solid reflective layers trap heat fast. The mesh allows airflow during hard efforts, and while this is still a vest — no sleeves, no hood — it sits comfortably through extended rides without becoming a sauna. For three-season commuters and fair-weather trail riders, that's the right tradeoff.

Pockets and practicality

A chest pocket handles your phone or a folded card; a back pocket takes a snack, a folded tool, or a light layer. Neither is huge, but both are positioned sensibly and secured with zips. The zip pulls themselves are oversized enough to grab with glove-covered fingers — a detail that sounds minor until you're trying to access your pocket in November at 6 a.m.

Washing and longevity

Reflective gear has a reputation for degrading with washing. Proviz says machine washable, and the CE EN 20471 certification includes washability testing as part of the standard — so this isn't a claim we're taking on faith. The fluorescent side should hold its color through a reasonable number of cycles, though we'd still recommend cold wash and air dry as a habit.

The honest caveats

This is a vest. It does nothing for your arms in wind or cold, and at $29.99 it's not waterproof. In shoulder seasons you'll still want a base layer underneath and possibly a jacket on top. The reflective side is also stiffer than the fluorescent side — not uncomfortable, but perceptible. And if you're riding in conditions where you genuinely need warmth, a gilet is a supplement, not a solution.
