Best for
Runners who log miles in low-light conditions — early mornings, post-work evenings, winter months — and want visibility built into the shorts themselves rather than added via a vest or ankle band.
Skip if
You run exclusively in daylight and need multiple pockets for long-distance fueling, or you prioritize a premium fabric feel over functional safety features.

The verdict
At $24.99, Proviz's running shorts deliver something most budget options skip entirely: 360-degree reflectivity — front and back — that makes a genuine difference when you're logging miles before sunrise or after dark.
What we love
- Reflective detail on both front and back — full 360° visibility, not just a token logo strip
- PFC-free DWR finish adds light rain resistance without legacy PFAS chemistry
- Back zip pocket lies flat and stays closed mid-stride
- Internal mesh brief liner prevents chafe without adding bulk
- Genuinely lightweight at 0.26 lb
Worth knowing
- No side pockets — one back zip is all you get
- Plastic drawstring pulls feel budget-grade
- DWR coating degrades with repeated washing and will eventually need refreshing
- Polyester-elastane hand feel won't satisfy runners used to premium stretch fabrics
Our review
The visibility argument
Proviz built their reputation on one idea: runners should be seen. These shorts are that philosophy distilled into a $25 garment. The reflective print wraps the front and the back, which sounds obvious until you realize most "reflective" running gear just stamps a logo on the heel or slaps a strip on the back. Here, a car coming at you or passing you will catch the detail either way. For solo dawn and dusk runners, that's not a minor spec — it's the whole point.
What you're actually wearing
The fabrication is polyester-elastane, which is standard issue for running shorts at this price. It's not the silky four-way stretch you'd find on a $90 pair of On or Tracksmith shorts, but it moves fine through a full stride and dries quickly. The DWR (durable water-repellent) finish is PFC-free, which matters if you care about the chemicals in your laundry runoff — and it means a light drizzle beads off rather than soaking in. Worth noting: DWR degrades with washing. After 20 or so cycles you may want to refresh it with a spray-on treatment.
The waistband uses internal jacquard elastic — it lies flat, doesn't dig, and the external drawstring with plastic pulls lets you dial the fit. The pulls feel utilitarian rather than premium, but they work.
The liner and the pocket
The internal mesh brief liner is snug and supportive without being restrictive. It's the kind of thing you notice only when it's absent — no chafe, no shifting mid-run. One back zip pocket sits flat against the body. It's sized for a key, a card, and your phone if your phone is not enormous. The zipper pull is easy to work mid-run with gloves on, which we appreciate.
The one real limitation
There are no side pockets. If you're the type who likes to stash a gel in each hip, you'll need a race vest or a belt to supplement. For a 30-60 minute maintenance run, the single back pocket is plenty. For longer efforts requiring nutrition, it's tight.
Who is buying these
These are purpose-built safety shorts, not lifestyle shorts. They're not the pair you grab for a gym session or a casual 5K on a sunny afternoon. But if you run before the commute, after work in November, or on any route where a driver's reaction time is the variable you most want to influence — these are an unusually smart $25.
Common questions
Men's Lightweight Running Shorts, answered
Do Proviz running shorts have a built-in liner?
Yes — an internal mesh brief liner is included for support and chafe prevention.
Are these shorts waterproof?
Not waterproof, but they have a PFC-free DWR (durable water-repellent) finish that sheds light rain. Heavy downpours will soak through.
How reflective are these shorts — will they actually be visible at night?
The reflective print runs across the front and back, so they catch headlights from both directions. Proviz is a visibility-focused brand and the coverage here is more substantial than the token strips you get on most running shorts.
Do they have pockets?
One back zip pocket, sized for a key, cards, and a compact phone. There are no side pockets.
What fabric are the Proviz running shorts made from?
A polyester/elastane blend — lightweight, quick-drying, and four-way stretch for a full range of motion.
How do I maintain the DWR water-repellent finish?
DWR degrades over time with washing. Wash in cool water with a technical-fabric detergent, and after 15–20 washes consider applying a wash-in or spray-on DWR treatment (brands like Nikwax and Grangers make affordable options) to restore performance.
