Best for

Walkers, runners, cyclists, and commuters who want inexpensive, set-it-and-forget-it visibility in low light.

You need a light source to actually see where you're going — this is strictly a be-seen device, not a headlamp replacement.

The verdict

At $4.99, the Proviz LED Flasher is the cheapest piece of safety gear you'll ever buy that might actually save your life — a no-fuss clip-on blinky with a 100-hour battery and three modes that earns its place on any bag, shoe, or vest.

What we love

  • Genuinely cheap at $4.99 — low enough to buy multiples
  • 100-hour battery life on a standard, easy-to-find CR2032
  • Three modes (flash, constant, off) cover real use cases
  • Nearly weightless at 0.04 lb — you won't feel it
  • Versatile clip attachment works on bags, shoes, vests, strollers

Worth knowing

  • No waterproofing rating listed — use with caution in heavy rain
  • Visibility aid only — provides no illumination for your path
  • Clip may not hold reliably on high-vibration surfaces like rough-road cycling bags

Our review

What It Is (And What It Isn't)

The Proviz LED Flasher is not a headlamp. It will not light your path home. What it does — at the price of a gas-station snack — is make you visible to drivers, cyclists, and anyone else who needs to not hit you. That's the whole job. It does it well.

Proviz makes the reflective vest that road runners and cyclists swear by, and this flasher slots directly into that ecosystem: it clips onto the Classic Yellow X-Vest for a combined visibility setup that's hard to beat at any price. But it works just as well as a standalone unit on a backpack strap, a shoe, a stroller handle, or a dog's collar.

Three Modes, No Fuss

Flash, constant, off. Cycle through them with a single button. Flash mode is the high-visibility default — the kind of aggressive blink that catches peripheral vision. Constant is better for situations where you want to be seen without the strobing effect, like a group ride where everyone's blinking at slightly different frequencies and the cumulative effect gets disorienting. Off is self-explanatory.

The LED is genuinely bright for the size — this is not the dim amber glow of a cheap keychain light. We wouldn't call it visible from a mile away, because we don't know that and won't pretend to, but it reads clearly from across a dark parking lot.

The Battery Math

The CR2032 is one of the most common coin cells in existence. You can buy a 10-pack for under $5 at any pharmacy, hardware store, or dollar store. Proviz says 100 hours of runtime, which — even if real-world use lands somewhat lower — is months of regular use before you need to think about it. The fact that it's user-replaceable matters more than people realize; lights with sealed, rechargeable batteries eventually die permanently and become landfill. This one just needs a new quarter-sized battery.

Weight (Essentially Zero)

At 0.04 pounds, this is lighter than most earbuds. You will not notice it on your bag. You will forget it's there, which is actually the point — the best safety gear is the gear you don't have to think about.

Honest Limitations

This is a supplemental visibility aid, not a primary light source. If you're running trails at night and need to see where you're putting your feet, you need a headlamp. The LED Flasher is for being seen, not for seeing.

The clip mechanism works, but it's not designed for extreme conditions — we wouldn't stake our lives on it staying attached to a bike bag over a very rough gravel road. On a vest, a shoe loop, or a backpack strap, it's fine.

There's also no waterproofing rating listed, which we won't invent. If you're running in heavy rain, treat it accordingly and don't submerge it.

The Case For Just Buying One

Five dollars. One hundred hours. Replaceable battery. Three modes. Clips onto basically anything. The math here is simple: the cost of not being visible to a distracted driver is much higher than $4.99. We keep a few of these in a drawer and clip one onto every bag we use for evening walks, commutes, or rides. It's the kind of thing you buy once and then buy again as gifts because everyone you know should have one.

Common questions

LED Flasher, answered

What battery does the Proviz LED Flasher use?

A CR2032 coin cell battery, which is widely available at pharmacies, hardware stores, and online. The battery is user-replaceable and rated for 100 hours of runtime.

Does the Proviz LED Flasher work without the X-Vest?

Yes. It clips onto bags, shoes, strollers, or any strap independently. The X-Vest compatibility is a bonus, not a requirement.

Is the Proviz LED Flasher waterproof?

No waterproof or water-resistance rating is published for this product. It will handle light moisture, but we'd avoid submerging it or relying on it in sustained heavy rain.

How long does the battery last?

Proviz rates it at 100 hours. Real-world life will vary depending on which mode you use most — flash mode typically draws less continuous current than constant-on.

Can I use this on a bike?

It works as a supplemental blinky on a bag or clothing, but it's not designed as a dedicated bike light. For road cycling, pair it with a purpose-built rear light rated for bike mount vibration.

How does it compare to a rechargeable safety light?

Rechargeable lights are more convenient if you remember to charge them — but sealed batteries eventually die permanently. The LED Flasher's replaceable CR2032 means the light itself can last for years without becoming e-waste.
