The early-morning runner, cyclist, or dog-walker who wants to be seen by traffic without fussing with clip-on lights or headlamp straps.

The verdict

At $19.99, the Proviz LED Beanie is the most sensible running-light purchase you can make — not because it's flashy, but because it keeps your hands free, your head warm, and oncoming traffic aware of you, all from a charge you'll only remember to do once a week.

What we love

  • Hands-free lighting that points where you look — more practical than arm or chest mounts
  • USB rechargeable with a genuine ~8-hour runtime on low, no disposable batteries
  • LED module removes cleanly for machine washing
  • IP44-rated for sweat and light rain without fuss
  • Three brightness modes for road running, walking, or low-key camp use

Worth knowing

  • Acrylic knit doesn't wick or regulate moisture as well as Merino wool on harder efforts
  • 200mAh battery is small — high-mode runtime is meaningfully shorter than the 8-hour rating suggests
  • One-size-fits-all has real limits for larger head sizes
  • IP44 is splash-resistant, not waterproof — not the right call for sustained heavy rain

Our review

Why a light on your head beats a light in your hand

We've tried chest clips, armband strobes, and knuckle lights. They all share one problem: your hands can't just be hands anymore. The Proviz LED Beanie sidesteps the whole debate by putting the light where it already makes sense — on your head, pointing wherever you're looking. That's not a novel idea, but Proviz executes it at a price that removes every excuse not to own one.

The light itself

Three modes — high, medium, low — cover the range from "I'm running a dark country road and need cars to see me" to "I'm camping and just need to find my water bottle." We ran primarily on low and medium; the high mode is genuinely bright enough to be obnoxious at close range, which means it does its job. The IP44 rating means it handles sweat and light rain without drama. Don't dunk it, but don't panic if you get caught in a drizzle.

The USB charging is a small quality-of-life win over CR2032 batteries you'll inevitably not have when you need them. One to two hours to a full charge, and Proviz rates it at up to eight hours of runtime — that figure is realistic on low; high mode will burn through faster. The 200mAh cell is modest, but for something you're wearing on a 45-minute run, it's plenty.

The beanie

Soft woven acrylic — warmer than you'd expect at this price, and the knit is open enough that you're not soaking through it on a hard effort. It's not a Merino-wool situation; acrylic doesn't regulate moisture the way natural fibers do, so on longer or harder runs you'll feel the difference. But for the cold-weather commuter or the casual early-morning walker, it does the job without complaint.

The LED module pops out for washing, which matters — you cannot machine wash an embedded circuit board, and we appreciate that Proviz didn't make us think twice about it. Pull out the light, toss the hat in with the rest of your kit.

One size fits all — mostly

The fit is stretchy enough to cover most adult head sizes, and we found it sat snugly without feeling constricting. If you have a notably large head, try before committing — the "fits all" promise has limits. The light sits centered at the brow, not up at the crown, so it actually illuminates the path in front of you rather than the sky.

The honest take

Proviz makes gear for people who are serious about being seen. This is their entry point — unpretentious, functional, easy to recommend. It won't replace a dedicated headlamp for technical trail running, and acrylic isn't the warmth-per-ounce champion that wool is. But for under twenty dollars, it solves a real safety problem without asking anything complicated of you.

Common questions

LED Beanie, answered

How long does the Proviz LED Beanie battery last?

Proviz rates it at up to 8 hours, but that figure is on the low brightness setting. High mode will drain the 200mAh battery faster — expect significantly less on sustained high use.

Can you wash the Proviz LED Beanie in a washing machine?

Yes — the LED module is designed to be removed before washing, after which the beanie itself can go in the machine with your regular laundry.

Is the Proviz LED Beanie waterproof?

The integrated LED light is IP44 rated, which means it's protected against splashing water from any direction — fine for sweat and light rain, but not submersion or heavy downpours.

How long does it take to charge the Proviz LED Beanie?

Proviz says 1–2 hours via USB. The charging port is standard USB, so any phone charger or laptop port works.

What brightness modes does the LED Beanie have?

Three modes: high, medium, and low. No flashing/strobe mode is listed.

Is the Proviz LED Beanie good for running at night?

It's a solid choice for road running and neighborhood routes where the goal is visibility to drivers. For technical trail running where you need a powerful beam to navigate terrain, a dedicated headlamp with higher lumens is the better tool.
