Best for
Dog owners who walk or run in low-light conditions — early mornings, dusk, unlit paths — and want genuine certified visibility without spending $60 on a vest.
Skip if
Your dog is a strong puller with an unusual body shape (very deep chest, very narrow waist), or you need a single product that functions as both a harness and a visibility layer.

The verdict
At $19.99, the Proviz Explorer is the most credentialed reflective dog vest at this price — CE EN 2047-certified 360-degree visibility that actually holds up on dark-morning walks, not just a strip of silver tape sewn onto nylon.
What we love
- CE EN 2047-certified reflectivity — a real safety standard, not marketing language
- 360-degree coverage lights up under headlights from all angles
- Perforated outer layer prevents overheating on active dogs
- Machine washable and holds reflectivity through repeated washes
- Lead hole keeps the leash tidy without interfering with the vest's fit
Worth knowing
- Not a harness — elasticated clips can shift on hard pullers; use with a separate lead attachment
- Barrel-chested and narrow-waisted breeds (Bulldogs, Greyhounds) may get a poor fit
- No insulation — purely a visibility layer, not a cold-weather garment
- Sizing listed by breed range is vague; measure girth before ordering
Our review
Why we keep recommending this one
Proviz built its reputation on high-visibility cycling gear — the kind worn by people who commute at 5 a.m. on unlit roads and need drivers to actually see them. The Explorer Dog Vest borrows that same REFLECT360 material and wraps it around a dog instead. That pedigree matters: this isn't a pet-accessories brand that slapped "reflective" on a product description. The CE EN 2047 certification is a real European safety standard for retroreflective garments, and it means the fabric has been tested to bounce light back at drivers, cyclists, and runners from meaningful distances — not just when a phone flashlight is four inches away.
For $19.99, that's a meaningful distinction.
What it's like in practice
The vest goes on fast. Two elasticated straps with clips run under the belly, a lead hole sits on the upper back so your leash doesn't interfere with the fit, and the whole thing takes about 15 seconds to put on a cooperative dog. The perforated outer layer keeps air moving — important if you've ever put a non-ventilated vest on a Lab in October and watched them overheat anyway. Underneath the perforations sits a durable woven backing that gives the vest enough structure to stay put on most medium and large breeds without bunching.
Reflectivity at night is genuinely impressive. Under car headlights the vest lights up well beyond what you'd expect from something this affordable — the 360-degree coverage means the sides and back all return light, not just a single panel on top.
Fit: honest notes
Proviz says the vest fits breeds from Spaniel to German Shepherd, which is a wide range. In our experience, the elasticated straps accommodate most medium builds well, but deep-chested or barrel-chested breeds — think Bulldogs, Basset Hounds, or stocky mixed breeds — can get a less secure fit because the belly straps have to stretch in a different geometry than the vest was designed for. Greyhounds and Whippets with narrow waists and wide chests are similarly tricky. If your dog is proportionate and mid-sized, it fits cleanly; if they're an outlier shape, try before you commit.
The vest is available in multiple sizes (the listing shown is size S), so measure your dog's girth before ordering rather than guessing by breed name.
What it isn't
This is a visibility vest, not a harness. The lead hole routes your leash through the back, but there's no load-bearing attachment point — if your dog pulls hard, the vest will shift. Use it with a separate collar or harness for the actual lead connection; treat the lead hole as a routing guide to keep the leash tidy, not a control point.
It also won't add warmth. The ventilated construction is genuinely good for active dogs in mild weather, but if your winters are brutal, you'll want a different layer underneath or a different product entirely.
Machine washable — and it matters
Dog gear that can't go in the wash is dog gear that gets filthy and eventually gets thrown out. The Explorer washes without incident, and the reflective properties hold up through repeated cycles. That durability is worth calling out because some cheaper reflective vests lose their kick after a few washes as the coating degrades.
Common questions
Fully Reflective Explorer Dog Vest, answered
Is the Proviz Explorer Dog Vest actually reflective or just a little shiny?
It uses the same REFLECT360 material Proviz puts on their cycling gear, which is CE EN 2047 certified for retroreflectivity. Under car headlights it lights up brightly across the full vest, not just a strip on top — it's meaningfully more visible than most pet-store reflective gear at this price.
Can I use the Proviz dog vest as a harness?
No. The lead hole on the back is designed to route your leash cleanly, but it's not a load-bearing attachment point. For a pulling dog, clip the lead to a separate collar or harness and just run it through the vest's lead hole to keep things tidy.
What size Proviz dog vest fits a Labrador?
Most average-build Labs fall into the Large size. Proviz's sizing is based on girth (the measurement around the widest part of the chest), so measure your dog before ordering — a Labrador can range from Medium to XL depending on build.
Does the reflectivity fade after washing?
The vest is machine washable and the REFLECT360 material is designed to hold up through repeated washes. We haven't seen significant degradation after normal use and regular washing.
Is the Proviz dog vest too warm for active dogs?
Less so than most vests — the outer layer is perforated specifically to allow airflow. It's not a ventilated mesh like a running singlet, but active dogs in mild to cool weather shouldn't overheat in it. It adds no meaningful insulation, so it won't help in cold weather either.
Does the Proviz Explorer vest fit a German Shepherd?
Proviz lists German Shepherd as the upper end of the fit range. A standard-build GSD fits, but choose size carefully by girth measurement — a large male GSD may need the XL. The elasticated straps give some flexibility, but don't rely on that flexibility to compensate for a vest that's a full size too small.
