The verdict
The Proviz City is the commuter jacket we'd hand to anyone who rides before sunrise or after sunset — its 360-degree reflective fabric is genuinely striking in headlights, and at $79.99 it's one of the more honest values in cycling outerwear.
What we love
- 360-degree reflective shell — not just strips, the whole jacket lights up in headlights
- Seam-sealed construction adds genuine waterproofing integrity
- Reinforced shoulders protect against backpack strap wear — a thoughtful commuter detail
- Zipless underarm vents improve airflow without adding a failure point
- Fleece-lined collar provides real warmth on cold-start mornings
Worth knowing
- 5,000mm waterproof rating is adequate for light rain but not sustained downpours — heavy-weather riders will need more
- The reflective aesthetic is very utilitarian; if you want something that looks as good off the bike as on it, look elsewhere
- Sizing runs to a single listed spec per SKU — worth checking Proviz's size guide carefully before ordering
Our review
What it actually does
Proviz built the City around one core idea: you should be impossible to miss. The fabric isn't just reflective in strips along the seams — the entire outer shell bounces headlights back at drivers, in every direction. We've seen plenty of jackets with a reflective panel on the back or a stripe down the arm. This is different. At night, the whole jacket lights up like a road sign. It's the kind of thing that makes drivers slow down before they're even close to you.
That visibility hook is the reason The Times, The Telegraph, and The Guardian have all featured the brand. Proviz didn't earn those mentions with marketing copy — the jacket is genuinely striking in person.
The waterproofing, honestly
The 5,000mm hydrostatic head rating keeps you dry in persistent light rain and shower conditions — what the industry calls "shower proof" territory. For a dry-season commuter or someone riding through unpredictable spring weather, that's perfectly adequate. If you regularly ride through sustained downpours or Scottish winters, you'll want something rated at 10,000mm or above. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have you caught out.
Seam-sealed construction does add real protection, closing the stitching holes that cheap jackets ignore. Combined with the adjustable Velcro cuffs and elasticated waistband, the jacket seals reasonably well at the edges — which matters as much as the fabric rating when water is blowing sideways.
The commuter details that matter
Proviz clearly talked to people who actually ride to work before designing this. The reinforced shoulders with mesh overlay address a specific pain point: backpack strap wear. Anyone who's watched their favorite jacket develop bald patches where the straps sit will appreciate this. Three pockets — front, rear, and one on the side — mean you're not choosing between your keys and your phone.
The underarm vents are worth calling out. Most vented cycling jackets put zips in the underarm, which adds complexity and a failure point. Proviz removed the zips entirely on this redesign, leaving open channels that work through movement. It's a quieter improvement, but you notice it on climbs.
The fleece-lined collar is a small thing that makes a real difference on cold morning starts. The back pleat gives the jacket enough stretch that you don't feel pinned to the handlebar on longer efforts.
Weight and feel
At roughly 500g (just over a pound), the City sits in a sensible middle ground — light enough that it doesn't feel like a burden, substantial enough that you're not second-guessing the waterproofing in a drizzle. It's not a packable racing cape. It's a jacket that lives on a hook by the door and goes on every morning without a second thought.
Who it's for
The City is a commuter jacket, not a sportive jacket. It's shaped for road bikes and urban geometry, and the reflective fabric makes the most sense for riders dealing with traffic, streetlights, and early or late hours. If that describes your ride, we'd reach for it before most things in this price range.
Common questions
City Women's 100% Reflective Waterproof Commuter Cycling Jacket, answered
Is the Proviz City jacket fully waterproof or just water-resistant?
It's rated at 5,000mm hydrostatic head with seam-sealed construction — enough to keep you dry in light to moderate rain and shower conditions. It's not designed for sustained heavy downpours; for those, you'd want a jacket rated at 10,000mm or above.
How visible is the Proviz reflective cycling jacket at night?
Very. Unlike jackets with reflective piping or a single back panel, the City's entire outer shell is reflective — it returns light from car headlights in all directions. It's one of the most visible commuter jackets at this price point.
How does the Proviz City jacket fit — does it run small or large?
Proviz designs this for women's cycling geometry, so it has a longer back and a more tailored torso. The elasticated, adjustable waistband helps dial in the fit. We'd recommend checking Proviz's size chart directly before ordering, especially if you're between sizes.
Can I wear the Proviz City jacket for running or walking, or is it cycling-specific?
The cut is optimized for cycling — longer in the back, shaped for a forward lean on the bars. It'll work for walking or light activity, but the proportions won't feel ideal if you're upright. For a dual-use jacket, something with a more neutral cut would serve you better.
Does the Proviz City jacket have pockets for commuting essentials?
Yes — three pockets total: one at the front, one at the rear, and one on the side. Enough for a phone, keys, and a card without needing a bag for short commutes.
How does the Proviz City compare to higher-end cycling rain jackets?
At $79.99, the City competes well on visibility and commuter-specific features. Where it concedes ground is waterproof rating — premium jackets from Gore-Tex or Rapha reach 10,000–28,000mm. If heavy weather riding is a priority, the City will feel like a compromise. For fair-weather commuting and dawn-or-dusk visibility, it punches above its price.
