Anyone whose door drags on a thick mat or whose current doormat folds up under a door sweep — or anyone who wants their entryway to look finished rather than functional.

You need heavy-duty mud-catcher performance for a working farm or construction boots, or you're outfitting a back utility entrance where looks don't matter and $25 will do.

The verdict
The Insider is the rare doormat that actually solves the under-door gap problem — its borderless, ultra-thin profile sits flush so nothing bunches, trips, or catches, and the sable colorway is warm enough to look intentional rather than utilitarian.
What we love
- Borderless design eliminates door-catching and bunching — solves a real, annoying problem
- Ultra-thin profile works with doors that can't clear standard mat thickness
- Sable colorway is warm and considered — looks intentional in a visible entryway
- Slip-resistant backing holds position without relying on weight
- Versatile: works equally well at a front door, mudroom, or kitchen sink
Worth knowing
- $67 is a steep ask for a doormat — you're paying for design, not just function
- Sable surface will show light-colored pet hair and dust more than a patterned mat would
- 2'3" x 3' is standard size — won't cover a wide mudroom bench area without doubling up
- Lightweight construction means the backing has to do all the grip work; on very smooth tile it may shift slightly under hard use
Our review
The Problem It's Solving
Most doormats fail in one of two ways: they're too thick to let the door swing freely, or they have a raised rubber border that catches the door sweep and folds over. Porte + Hall's Insider addresses both with what sounds like a minor design detail but turns out to matter a lot in daily life — no border, ultra-thin construction. We've tested enough mats to know that "low profile" on a product page often means "not as thick as a bath mat," so we were skeptical. The Insider, though, genuinely lies flat.
Living With It
The sable colorway (a warm dark brown, closer to espresso than charcoal) is one of the better color choices we've seen in this category. It reads as a deliberate interior decision rather than a functional afterthought, which matters when the mat is visible from your entryway. It works in a mudroom, a hall runner spot near the garage door, or a kitchen sink position — the brand markets it for all three, and we think the kitchen use case is particularly underrated. The water-absorbent surface handles splashes and damp shoes without leaving a wet patch underfoot.
At 2'3" x 3', the footprint is standard doormat territory — wide enough for two feet side by side, not so large it dominates a narrow entry. The 2-pound weight is light, which helps with the slip-resistant backing doing more of the stabilizing work rather than the mat's own mass.
What We'd Call Out
At $67, you are paying a design premium. There are functional mats at half the price. What you're paying for here is the borderless engineering and a colorway that photographs well and holds up in a visible spot — if that matters to your space, it's worth it. If you're outfitting a utility closet or a back door no one ever sees, there are cheaper ways to catch mud.
The sable color is forgiving with dark debris but will show white pet hair and light-colored dust more than a heavier-patterned option would. It's not a problem, just something to know before you commit.
Bottom Line
For anyone who's been living with a folded-over mat or a door that drags, the Insider is a genuinely better solution — not just a prettier version of the same product.
Common questions
The Insider - Wild Side (Sable) / Doormat, answered
Is the Porte + Hall Insider mat thin enough to fit under a door?
Yes — the ultra-thin, borderless profile is specifically designed so doors with tight clearance (including those with door sweeps) can open and close without catching. It's one of the mat's core design features, not just a side benefit.
What does 'Wild Side (Sable)' look like?
Sable is a warm, deep brown — closer to dark espresso than to gray or black. It reads as a neutral that works with wood floors, natural stone, and warm-toned entryways.
Will this mat stay in place on hardwood or tile?
It has a slip-resistant backing designed to grip smooth surfaces. The mat weighs 2 pounds, so the backing is doing most of the work. It holds well under normal foot traffic; on very polished or waxed floors it may need occasional repositioning.
How absorbent is it — will it handle wet, snowy boots?
The surface is water-absorbent and handles damp shoes and light moisture well. It's not designed as a heavy-duty snow trap; for serious winter use in wet climates, pair it with a tray underneath for overflow.
What size is the Insider doormat?
2 feet 3 inches wide by 3 feet long — a standard doormat footprint. It fits a single door entry comfortably; for a wider mudroom or double door, you'd want two or a larger rug.
Can I use this as a kitchen mat near the sink?
Yes, and this is one of our favorite use cases for it. The water-absorbent surface handles sink splashes, the thin profile doesn't create a tripping hazard, and the borderless design means it sits flush against cabinets without curling.
