The verdict
The Outer Ascent is what an Adirondack chair becomes when a company that takes outdoor furniture seriously gets hold of it — the classic silhouette, meaningfully improved ergonomics, and a weather-protection system clever enough to make leaving cushions outside feel reasonable.
What we love
- OuterShell® built-in cushion cover is a genuinely clever solution to the outdoor storage problem
- Ergonomic backrest angle is less severe than a traditional Adirondack — more positions, easier to get up
- Ottoman is included, making the chair a full lounging setup out of the box
- Charcoal colorway is versatile and reads as modern without being trendy
Worth knowing
- $599 is a single chair — full patio sets get expensive quickly
- Still a lean-back silhouette by design; not the right chair for eating, working, or upright conversation
- No physical showroom to test fit before buying at this price
Our review
The classic, reconsidered
Adirondack chairs have been around since 1903, and most of them haven't changed much. The angle is fixed, the slats are flat, and they're either plastic (cheap but sad) or raw wood (beautiful but needy). Outer built the Ascent as an answer to that stalemate: the recognizable wide-arm silhouette you want on a deck, re-engineered for people who actually live in their backyards.
The backrest slope is gentler than a traditional Adirondack — you're reclined, not horizontal — which matters more than it sounds. Classic Adirondacks pin you at an angle that's wonderful for staring at the sky and impractical for anything else, like holding a drink or getting back up. The Ascent's contours let you shift positions without feeling like you're fighting the chair.
The OuterShell® detail
Outer's signature feature is the OuterShell® — a weatherproof cover that lives inside a zippered pouch built into the back of the seat cushion. When you're done for the day, you unzip the pouch, flip the cover over the cushion, and the whole thing sits out in the rain without complaint. No hauling cushions inside, no storage ottoman, no cushion-specific shed. It's the kind of solution that feels obvious in retrospect, and it's executed well.
The cushion is optional on the Ascent, but if you're spending $599 on this chair, you should factor in the cushion — it's where the OuterShell® lives and it meaningfully changes the experience from handsome-but-hard to genuinely comfortable.
What it's like to sit in
The seat is spacious without being sloppy. The wide, flat arms are the correct arms — they hold a full glass, a phone, a book. The ottoman extends the leg rest so you can go fully horizontal when the afternoon earns it, or fold it away when guests arrive and you need the footprint back.
In Charcoal, the chair reads as modern without trying too hard. It won't fight with a teak dining set or look out of place next to a fire pit. This is a piece that's meant to stay outside and improve with a season or two of use.
The honest caveats
At $599, this is a single chair and ottoman. That's a real number to sit with. Outer's pricing reflects genuine materials and construction quality, but if your patio needs four chairs, you're looking at a significant outlay, and the math gets harder to justify.
Adirondack chairs also have an inherent limitation: the geometry. Even modernized, this is a lean-back chair. It's not where you'll sit to work outside, have a long dinner, or do much besides relax. That's a feature for some people and a limitation for others — know which you are before buying.
Outer's direct-to-consumer model means no showroom visits to sit in it first, which is a real friction point for a $599 purchase.
Common questions
Ascent Adirondack Chair + Ottoman (Experience Outer), answered
Is the Outer Ascent Adirondack Chair worth the price?
At $599 for the chair and ottoman, it's a premium buy — but Outer builds for durability and the OuterShell® cushion system solves a real outdoor furniture pain point. It's worth it if you want one excellent lounger you won't replace in two seasons.
Does the Outer Adirondack chair come with a cushion?
The Ascent Adirondack is available with an optional cushion that features Outer's OuterShell® built-in cover. The 'Experience Outer' bundle includes the ottoman; check the product page for current cushion configurations.
What is OuterShell and how does it work?
OuterShell® is Outer's proprietary weatherproof cover integrated into the back of the seat cushion. When you're done sitting, you unzip a pouch and flip the cover over the cushion — protecting it from rain without taking it inside.
How does the Outer Ascent compare to a traditional Adirondack chair?
The Ascent uses a gentler backrest slope than most Adirondacks, so you're in a more usable reclined position rather than nearly horizontal. The ergonomic contouring also makes it easier to shift positions and stand up.
Can the Outer Adirondack stay outside year-round?
Outer designs its furniture for outdoor permanence, and the OuterShell® cushion cover is built specifically for leaving cushions outside. That said, extended exposure to extreme conditions varies by climate — check Outer's care guidance for your region.
Does the ottoman come included with the Ascent Adirondack?
The 'Experience Outer' version of the Ascent includes the ottoman. Confirm current bundle configurations on Outer's site, as options may vary.
