Designed by Métis artist Kaija Heitland, this exquisite interpretation of our essential Modern Moccasin celebrates the rich Métis musical and dance traditions while honoring the artistry of our ancestors. Inspired by the delicately embroidered Métis dance slippers lovingly crafted by grandmothers, this design pays tribute to their cultural legacy and timeless elegance. The vibrant jewel tones echo the silk twill once used, while the crimson suede leather, with its carefully chosen sheen, evokes the sumptuous velvets that framed their intricate embroidery. Featuring a berry-patterned outsole, this moccasin is crafted from top-grade leather, delivering a luxuriously barefoot feel. Its classic construction blends tradition with sophistication, effortlessly complementing any look. About the Art "To me, one of the most identifiable cultural practices of the Métis community is our fiddle music and jigging. I wanted to create a shoe inspired by the delicately embroidered Métis dance slippers our Grandmothers so carefully crafted with love for their culture and community. The colours in the design reflect the rich jewel tones of the silk twill they used and the carefully selected tone and sheen of the crimson leather suede recalls the sumptuous velvets they embroidered on to. My hope was to create a dance shoe to inspire others to jig, dance and take a deeper interest in our unique Métis musical traditions."
