Salvia officinalis Culinary Sage Kokedama Soft, velvety silver-green leaves give this Sage Kokedama its sculptural beauty and culinary value. Hand-shaped using a Japanese moss ball technique, the root system is encased in soil and wrapped with moss to form a compact sphere. Leaves carry an earthy, slightly peppery flavor—the savory backbone of roasted dishes and browned butter sauces. Pick just before cooking for the strongest aroma. Easy to Read, Straightforward Care Salvia officinalis is a sun-loving herb with broad, soft foliage that behaves differently from rosemary , thyme , and chives . Leaves lose moisture faster and signal needs clearly, making care straightforward. Limp leaves signal thirst; yellowing lower leaves indicate overwatering. Sunlight and Savory Depth A south-facing window with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight is where this indoor sage plant does its best work. The more light it receives, the deeper and more concentrated its aromatic oils become. Turn the sphere 90 degrees every few days so growth stays balanced. Each piece ships with your choice of a white or gray patina tray , and for added height, pair with our small Wrought Iron Planter Stand (sold separately). What Sage Needs Soak the moss ball weekly or when it feels light, squeezing out excess water. Never allow standing water, which causes root rot. Good airflow prevents mildew. Snip the top few inches of soft green stems just above a leaf node, taking no more than one-third at a time. Don't cut into woody brown stems at the base, as sage regrows poorly from old wood. IN A NUTSHELL 6–8 hours of direct sun in a south-facing window daily. Turn 90 degrees every few days to prevent leaning. Soak the moss ball weekly or when it's lighter; squeeze out excess water. Limp leaves = thirsty, yellow = overwatering. Harvest green tips regularly; don't cut woody stems. Keep near the kitchen but away from the stove's heat.
