These iconic crosses are traditionally woven from straw or rushes on Imbolc or Imbolg, also known as Saint Brigid's Day. Imbolc is a traditional Gaelic festival on the 1st of February, marking the beginning of spring and in Christianity it is feast day of Saint Brigid. Hanging a Brigid's cross from the rafters of one's house was believed to bring the blessing and protection of the saint for the remainder of the year.
