What we're looking at

Aurate New York built its reputation on the idea that fine jewelry shouldn't require a special occasion or a salesperson in a suit. This pendant is a clean expression of that premise: a 1.2-carat VS-clarity CVD lab-grown diamond dropped into a 14k yellow gold bezel, nothing extraneous, sold without a chain so you put it exactly where you want it.

At $1,498 it is a real purchase — not something you impulse-buy at checkout. But it's also dramatically less than the mined-diamond equivalent would run, and the VS clarity grade means the stone itself is genuinely clean to the naked eye.

The bezel setting

Bezel settings polarize people, and it's worth being direct about why. A bezel wraps the girdle of the stone in a continuous rim of metal rather than holding it with prongs. The upside: the diamond is much better protected against chips and snags, and the profile reads as modern rather than bridal. The tradeoff: the metal rim obscures a slice of the stone's diameter and reduces how much light enters from the sides, which softens the brilliance relative to a four- or six-prong setting. On a 1.2ct round brilliant, that's not a dealbreaker — there's enough stone that it still has presence — but if maximum sparkle is what you're after, a prong set would serve you better.

For everyday wear, though, the bezel wins. You're not going to nick it on a laptop edge or lose a prong.

Lab-grown, specifically CVD

Aurate uses CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) diamonds, which are optically and chemically identical to mined stones. VS clarity means no inclusions visible to the naked eye. We won't oversell the ethics of lab-grown — the energy inputs are real — but on the questions of durability and appearance, there is no difference from a mined stone. Anyone who tells you they can spot the difference without a certificate is bluffing.

The practical implication: you're getting a stone that would retail for multiples of this price if it came out of the ground.

The no-chain thing

Aurate sells the pendant as a charm, not a complete necklace. This is either a feature or an annoyance depending on how you shop. If you already have a cable chain or a box chain you love — or you want to layer this with other pendants — the modularity is genuinely useful. If you're buying your first piece of fine jewelry and expected a complete necklace, factor in the additional cost of a chain before you check out.

Sizing and weight

At 0.01 lb the pendant is lighter than it looks in photos. That's a plus for daily wear — you'll forget it's there. The 14k gold (as opposed to 18k) means slightly more alloy, which is a little more durable and a little less yellow; in yellow gold it reads as warm without being loud.

Who it's really for

This pendant sits in an interesting spot: substantial enough to be a real gift or a self-purchase milestone, minimal enough to wear to work. The bezel keeps it from reading as engagement-adjacent, which is the trap most solitaire pendants fall into. It works equally well solo on a 16" chain or layered with a shorter chain and a smaller piece below it.
