What makes this one different

Ear jackets are underused. Most people either don't know the format or assume the back piece will be fiddly and annoying. The name is apt. Sensu is a Japanese folding fan, and the piece earns the reference — the spread of the gold echoes that precise, deliberate geometry. It's not maximalist, but it is unmistakably intentional.

The gold vermeil question

We want to be straight about vermeil because it matters at $199. Vermeil is sterling silver plated with gold — not solid gold, not gold-filled. Aurate uses a thicker-than-standard plating, which is the right call, but vermeil will eventually show wear on high-contact surfaces over years of daily wear. For earrings specifically, this is a slower timeline than, say, a bracelet — ears don't rub against things the way wrists do — but it's worth knowing. If you need something you can pass down in twenty years, you want solid gold. If you want that gold look at a fraction of solid-gold pricing, quality vermeil from a brand that takes plating seriously is a reasonable trade.

The archive revival reality

Aurate launched the Sensu in 2018. Bringing it back as a "small, limited batch" means exactly what it sounds like: when these sell out, that's it. We find archive revivals useful precisely because the original run proved the design had staying power — something that sold, disappeared, and generated enough regret to warrant bringing back is telling you something. That said, limited runs also mean if you lose a piece two years from now, a replacement may simply not exist.

On the ear

Because the jacket piece rests behind the lobe rather than hanging below it, the Sensu reads differently depending on hair and angle. With hair up or pulled back, the full fan is visible and the earring makes its statement. With hair down, you catch glimpses — which actually works well for everyday wear without demanding full attention. The silhouette is formal enough for a dinner out, understated enough for a meeting you need to be taken seriously in.

Fit and wearability

Ear jackets require a moment of attention when putting them on — you're threading the stud through, then positioning the back piece so the fan sits correctly. It becomes muscle memory quickly, but if you're someone who throws earrings in while walking out the door, expect a brief learning curve.
